Outside Broadcast Project

We're looking to raise funds for some Outside Broadcast equipment to enable us to do live events on the station.

Currently our Outside Broadcasts are a bit ad-hoc using some loaned equipment. We attend open days and events in our area. This year we’ve been to village fetes, beer festivals, bike nights and fun runs in places like Kingsey, Oakley, Cuddington and Brill. Our presenters have taken part in events like the Florence Nightingale Midnight Walk in Aylesbury and the Thame Carnival. We’ve even walked across hot coals in aid of charity. Recently we were at the Kop Hill Climb and Haddenham Feast Festival.

But these events can’t be broadcast live!
When we go to events, we record interviews with members of the public and people involved in running them. They have to be recorded because we don’t yet have the necessary equipment to broadcast live. Last year we put together a full show from rehearsals and behind the scenes at The Players Theatre Pantomime in Thame. How much better it would have been live!

We have broadcast from an event the same day, but because we don’t have the right equipment, recording has to be an hour in advance so that our playout software has time to build the interviews into its broadcast playlist. That’s time-consuming and specialised, so not many Red Kite presenters want to do it. We know they would do more outside broadcasts if new equipment made it easier.

What will outside broadcast equipment enable us to do?
Red Kite Radio will be able to broadcast remotely from the radio station in real time at a huge range of community events - from Aston Clinton Beer Festival and Cuddington Fete to Haddenham Summerfest, Haddenham Winterfest and Thame Arts & Literature Festival. We’ll have closer links with our listeners and with event organisers.

We’ll be able to set up at an event, playing music and our usual programmes, but the links will happen in real time, with the output going straight to the live audience as well as to listeners elsewhere. Red Kite Radio can be more interactive, playing requests and inviting people in the audience to do birthday shouts. Promoting events to listeners will be more ‘instant’. Now, when people listen, they’ve either missed the event or it’s already well underway by the time they hear it. By broadcasting live, we can invite our audience to ‘Come on down and join in the fun’. Events people attended can also be broadcast on Red Kite Radio at a later date, so that friends and family can also listen and share in these events.

Help us broadcast live from local events in real time!
We’re asking for pledges to help us buy outside broadcast equipment valued at £5,000. It will enable us to capture and relay sound from other locations back to the studio, so that we can broadcast events as they are happening! Please help us provide a more immediate service to listeners in the Vale and surrounding areas! Please follow the link below to our Spacehive page where you can make a pledge which is only cashed once we achieve our goal.
