Paul Wilkinson, a photographer from Haddenham, has won a string of National accolades including the coveted title of UK Portrait Photographer of the Year with a striking portrait of a lady from Buckinghamshire. The image of Carol, photographed at Paul’s studio, scooped the title at the National Master Photography Award’s ceremony at the weekend. Although it was an awards ceremony like no other.
Because of the restrictions of COVID – 19 everyone could not meet up as was originally planned for the prestigious event, but with technology, a fantastic professional award ceremony was hosted with hundreds of members attending online. Over 2000 entries from working professionals were received from the UK and worldwide. A panel of judges including some of the world’s top photographers had the mammoth task of judging the images. They commented that there is no doubt the winners really are at the pinnacle of creative excellence.
Paul achieved 18 Merits, 4 Finalists and 2 National Titles. When referencing Carol, the judges said that Paul’s image captures the true personality of this lady in a wonderfully emotive image. Subtle use of tones and the monochrome treatment ensure that there are no distractions from the true character of the sitter.

“My passion is to consistently create interesting and evocative images that show the subject’s characters. I am so proud to have achieved the titles this year and especially thrilled with the portrait of Carol. She came with her family to celebrate her granddaughter’s graduation but instantly I knew she was a real character. I visualized the shot and just knew how to capture Carol’s personality. She was a real pleasure to photograph” commented Paul.
Paul would like to thank his wonderful clients who have continually asked him to create images for them of the highest possible standard. A standard that has culminated in this new string of awards!
