Seven years old today - Tuesday 18th June 2024

The images below were taken on the launch day cake and champagne reception for invited guests at our studio at Haddenham Garden Centre on 18th June 2017.

Today (Tuesday 18th June 2024) we celebrate the seventh birthday of Red Kite Radio. Yes, we have now been on air for seven fantastic years and several of our shows will be recognising this achievement today.

The station was launched on a baking hot Sunday at Haddenham Garden Centre, where our studio is located, on 18th June 2017. There was a cake and champagne reception for invited guests (see the pictures posted here) and the station went on air at 11am that day with the song Beautiful Day by U2.

Since then, we have been broadcasting on 107.2fm to the people of Thame, Haddenham, Princes Risborough, Chinnor and all the surrounding villages in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout every year.  Through the power of the internet, we also have listeners from all over the country, and even throughout the world!

We also now have a Listen Again feature on our website, so if listeners miss a favourite show, or simply want to listen to it again, they just need to click a button at a time convenient for them.

Our initial licence was for five years and we were very proud when Ofcom renewed our licence two years ago.

On our birthday today, director Howard Bond said:  “A big thank you to everyone who helped get Red Kite Radio on the air:  the Rothschild Foundation, AVDC, Haddenham Beer Festivals Trust and the Hawkins family who own and run the Haddenham Garden Centre, which has been our base since 2017 (and our heritage station for Summerfest Radio from 2013 – 2016).  Also, to all volunteers past and present who give their time for free in a variety of roles, thank you, too.

“Red Kite Radio is a not-for-profit community radio station licensed by Ofcom.  We rely on advertising, grants and donations to cover our operating costs.  Our mission is to play classic hits and provide a service of local news, weather, travel and what’s on information for Thame, Haddenham and the villages.”

Listen out for special reflections on our birthday on these shows today:
